A Study on the Health Status of the Hospitalized Elderly

Abstract

This study was done to assess health stratus of the 259 elderly persons over 60 years who were admitted in hospitals in the City of Incheon.
Assessment of the elderly¢¥s health status carried out multidimensionally including physical, socioeconomical, and functional aspect.
Data were collected from March 1 to May 31 in 1995 through person to person interview. The questionnaire which was used in interview formulated based on literature review.
Analysis of the data was made for items of the elderly¢¥s demographic characteristics, socioeconomic status, chronic disease, physical impairment, and activities of daily living. Collected data were analyzed by the SAS program for the frequency, percentage, average, S. D., and X2test.
The results of the analysis were as follows
1. Male to female ratio of the study subjects were 67/100.
2 Age distribution of the subjects whose age under 69 years was 58.68%.
3. The percentage of the elderly persons lived with their children, lived with their spouse, lived alone were 54.05%, 33.97%, 9.26% respectively.
4.14.98% of the elderly person had symptoms in-cluding depression, headache, constipation, insorm.,, nia, and indigestion. 14.76% of subjects had musculoskeletal problem. 90.19% of the elderly persons with musculoskeletal problem had difficulty ` in activities.
Many elderly persons who had the blood and hematologic problems including anemia did not seek for medical diagnosis and treatment.
5. Most common physical and sensory impairments were limitation of range of motion and visual impairment.
6. Most dependent activities of PADL were going up the stairs and bathing, and most dependent ac. tivities of I ADL were shopping and cleaning.
7. Nearly half of the elderly persons living alone did not receive help from others. From 14.28% to 32% of the elderly persons with moderate or severe impairment in physical, sensory, and functional ability had no help from others.
Based on These findings, two suggestions were made to help the elderly persons :
1. In order to help the elderly persons, especially persons living alone, and having physical, sensory, and functional impairment, there should be the link-age between hospital, home health care, community health services, and long term care services.
2. Educational program for prevention and management of chronic disease and impairment should be developed, and care giving service programs especially physical therapy service should be established.
